Whilst I still get remarkably few bona fide human visitors here, I am paying attention to how those lucky few are actually getting here. For those not familiar with web hosting and HTTP referral:
-
Every time you browse from one page to another, the HTTP request for the new page includes a link to the old. This is a very useful tool for finding out how people are navigating to a particular page.
-
After performing a search with Google [or another major search engine], you will notice a big ugly URL in your browser’s location bar, and if you look closely, you will see your search terms embedded within the URL itself. This URL is what gets sent when you follow a link to one of the pages listed in your search results.
-
Web log analysis software extracts these referrals from server logs, and voila! you get to find out how well search engines are targetting your site!
Here follows a sample of the kind of searches that are getting hapless web farers washing up on the Jujusoft beach:
computer.*algorithm.*shortpath
tea encryption
html image background dont move
folder watching software
analysing donny darko
natata ebook
programming test log
open binary file text editor
ms dhtml activex control
html pages using tree view
"large file" text editor
text editor utf8
why cant I restore my active desktop
win2000 user loses privileges
"dhtml control" ie xhtml
send "bel character" to printer unix
"save clipboard" freeware "to a file"
debunking john edward
deinspirational
design text editor buffer
css spec form inline
chm editor
activex html editor
font size javascript function larger()
freetype lcd hinting anti aliasing
get admin privileges xp
"show all ip addresses"
"tiny encryption algorithm source code"

eyestrain "text viewer"
Seems to me a surprising amount of searching for text editors is going on out there. Also there are a few people interested in the MS DHTML editor.
Of course, the balance of this miniscule sample is affected by the actual content of my site. No one is going to get here by searching for Polar bears for instance, because I make no mention of them. Then again, I did mention them just now, so maybe I will get the odd Polar bear enthusiast. Whoops! Now I’ll definitely get the odd polar bear enthusiast, because I actually feature the phrase "Polar Bear Enthusiast" on my site! Anyone looking for those words will very possibly end up here, which is a shame, since I have nothing useful to say about polar bears.
Also, people often make spelling and typing errors, so it might pay to add a few well chosen deliberate mistakes to my site. Maybe I could say:
