More bad design

What is it with WindowsXP scanning files on a removable hard drive every time I connect it, and not giving me the option of turning it off? I never ever want this functionality enabled for any device, and yet the WinXP UI seems to have been designed to force it on me. I know I can probably kill it in the registry, but when you have to go to the registry to disable an intrusive and unnecessary feature, that is shit design.

I saw History of Violence today… not bad… Aragorn looks weird with short hair.

Bad design for an unnecessary feature, I agree. I think I’ve found a way to disable it.
Step 1: Download and install TweakUI from the following URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Step 2: Open TweakUI and expand the ‘My Computer’ tree.
Step 3: Expand the ‘AutoPlay’ tree and click on ‘Drives’.
Step 4: Uncheck the box next to whatever drive letters your removable hard drive likes to take. Or all of them. All of them is good.
I hope you find this helpful.
PS I like Drivey and this journal/weblog thing very much.

Hey I forgot all about TweakUI… thanks for the pointer, it’s exactly what I needed (ie no manual registry hacking)

I think it’s quite funny that there are, what, hundreds or more of programs like TweakThisOrThat - Windows has a fine program for tweaking everything including the AutoPlay setting. Try Start/Run and type gpedit.msc
