Rearranging the furniture

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

I just spent about two hours making minor changes to my blog layout, and one major change by putting comments on entry pages in a sidebar rather than at the end of the article… and now I suspect that wasn’t such a great idea, since it’s probably going to be a bit distracting trying to read an entry when you can already see people’s comments about it.

Why not try it out and tell me what you think… Should I put it back the way it was?

too distracting. I can’t even read the text cause the desire to type my response is too great..

Love it! (But I read absurdly fast)

I dig it, it is a different approach than the norm. But I really like your blog style period.

You mean there are people that don’t read you blog through an aggregator? :)

I preferred the old way. Having the comments in the sidebar gives me the impression that everyone is trying to butt in. I keep wanting to tell them to wait until the end of the post before making a comment. Bear in mind, however, that I don’t embrace change. That’s why my haircut is from 1998.

I like the old way better. When you squish the comments up they take up a lot of vertical space, so the page gets really tall just because of comments. Also I feel sqished :|

I also have an aversion to being squished, and exceedingly tall pages…

hey your stars look more like stars now and less like snow! It’s snowing in Katoomba right now BTW (lucky I’m headed in the other direction).

I did change the banner back— well spotted :)

I actually really like the narrow form, but agree that it can tend to make the page a little tall…

Also it occurs to me that no one will really see the comments unless they have already read the post in their aggregators or on the main page (or if they come here via search engine), so distracting from the post itself is not such a huge concern.

I’ll leave it like this for a while and see how I feel about it next week.

I like this format. One page, one scrolly wheel - what could be more natural?
