Resolutions for 2007

Saturday, January 6th, 2007
  1. 1280 x 800 — I’m seriously looking at buying a MacBook; since they are now Intel based and can run both WindowsXP and MacOSX it seems like a good time to switch (or rather, straddle). I especially look forward to getting my simpler apps ported to Mac, as well as using the iLife suite for stuff like video and sound editing. Maybe even get into Garage Band.
  2. Not get fat — I’m as heavy as I’ve ever been right now, and of course according to the grossly unreasonable BMI scale (Body Mass Index) I am in fact well into portly territory. So it’s fewer TimTams for me and more whatever healthy people eat.
  3. Get shit together — Rather than rounding out the list with a bunch of specifics, this is just a catchall to basically say that at the end of 2007 I plan to have my shit significantly more together than it is now, across all areas of my life.

That is all.

I look forward to Mac JujuSketch. Make sure you deck out your MacBook with lots of RAM, since it has no dedicated VRAM.

  2. dirtymouse says:

i would strongly recommend install 2gb memory.

  3. mark says:

I’m kind of keen to just get default configuration (middle one, ie white, 2.0GHz / 1GB RAM / 80GB HD), since I know Apple retailers (resellers?) can suck when anything beyond the standard is requested. I’ll price with extra RAM and see if I can get it cheaper through work.

I must warn you that number 3 is much more difficult than it sounds but good luck.

The only new years resolution that I have successfully stuck to is the one I made four years ago when I decided never to make another new years resolution.

  5. Charlotte says:

I’m with Timothy on that one… It will be interesting to see what number 3 entails for you. ;-D

The trick with that one is that I get to decide the metric by which shit-together-edness is measured :)

Note also the cop-out resolution in #2— much easier to resolve not to gain more weight than commit to losing any.

I was totally up for getting a macbook as I’ve been an intel dev for 10+ years and really love the mac UI. it turned out i couldn’t use my voda data card and the quality didn’t seem in keeping with the cost. I got a vaio SZ2XP instead (1280×900, core duo T2500) and it’s robust, quick and with the dongleless bluetooth mouse, really portable. Do your research on the mac.

  8. mark says:

Hmmm… I really want to be able to use OSX, are you running OSX on vaio, and if so, how?

I’m aware of the lack of PCMCIA slot (I have a wireless broadband card) and am considering the cost of going to a vodafone usb one (dongle, fairly small)

  9. Michael says:

    I’m XP bound :(

If you find a way to run the latest OSX on a pc, let me know!

  10. Jason Coleman says:

Garageband is a good reason to get into Macs - a great little recording app. I’ll stay with XP for now. Bad meories attached to Macs - code warrior etc… unfortunately, Bill Gates owns me :-)

  11. Jason Coleman says:

Nice list though. I should have simplified my one like that :-) . “get my shit together” … I like it.

  12. mark says:

AKAIK OSX must be hacked to run on other machines, so not particularly interested in that route.

The price point isn’t too bad for a machine that let’s me use either OS (not so into the plastic-y casing though)

  13. andrew says:

The plastic casing is robust. That’s partly why I bought a Macbook instead of a Pro; I take it on the train each day.

I second the recommendation for 2gig RAM. 1 would be OK, but slightly squishy. You needn’t pay Apple prices tho’: quality standard RAM should be fine.

If I did lots of big image or video work, if I mainly worked at home or office and travelled by car, if I needed a PC slot, I’d buy the Pro. Also, I’d dearly love the matte screen and backlit keyboard — no need to put a light on to type.

Still, I do like this machine. It’s more than enough for what I do. And tho’ there may be something wrong with me, after 4 years on Mac I still think it’s so cool to be able to drop into a UNIX terminal session, ssh/sftp/scp into my Web host…

  14. dirtymouse says:

A black macbook is preferrable. White looks cheap and can dis-colour. MacBook Pro silver wears out too easily and the paint job is below spec.

  15. dirtymouse says:

Re #3 May i recommend GTD, i’m now getting my shit together after 15 years of procrastinating..

  16. mark says:

I agree black is better (although will show fingerprints more) but am not really willing to shell out the extra $300+ for the color + 40GB HD

  17. dirtymouse says:

i have black. trust me, finder prints are much better than discolouration. You won’t notice the extra $300 after a week.

  18. dirtymouse says:

i mean, ‘you’ll find’ (not finder) that’s an Apple slip up, not that i use the Finder myself :)

  19. andrew says:

I have black. It shows every finger print and spot of fluff. I still love it. It’s not a black like a Thinkpad, it’s smoother, more satin.

  20. mark says:

    >What Price Macbook Beauty?

  21. andrew says:

Yeah, that was pretty much how it was.
