Politics kills me

Not in the ha-ha way, but in the I’m-getting-a-knot-in-my-stomach-and-can-feel-my-blood-pressure-rising kind of way. This insane Sarah Palin "bounce" where the ageing bumblefuck that is John McCain can somehow revitalize his campaign by reaching out and picking an ultra-rightwing "hockey mom" to steal the disaffected Hillary fans is beyond belief, and only the knowledge that the media has gone retarded and is blowing it all out of proportion is of any comfort right now.

If in fact, after eight years of Bush/Cheney and some of the ugliest political leadership imaginable— leading us to the point where anyone who wants to assuage their conscience after doing something downright awful can always think "hey, if the leaders of the free world can do it, why cant I?"— if, somehow, defying all logic, Americans truly think that another Republican administration rooted in [anti-diplomatic, anti-intellectual, anti-democratic] conservative Christian ideology is what we need at this point in time… if that happens, then I am going to find a way to go live on the goddamn Moon, because this planet will be truly fucked. I will have no choice but to assume the fundagelicals have succeeded in their agenda to bring about the End Times by making all the revelations crap in the bible come true, and I don’t want to stick around for that shit.

It was a clever move by McCain. Many evangelicals were not going to vote, but now they have someone who shares many of their values. And no, you can’t make the crap in the Bible come true, it just happens regardless.

Ok Ross, so, here’s the question I may not like the answer to but just have to ask:

Who would you be voting for (and why)?

I saw an interesting post via Crooks and Liars, that stated that the current furore over Palin’s fitness for office, and the whole personality thing, is exactly what the Republicans want - a diversion from the issues.

Who knows… it could be phase 1 of a Manchurian Candidate-y thing* — maybe old and busted McCain will conveniently be shot thus galvanizing the entire county in support of the new hotness for POTUS.

    * only this time Angela Lansbury would get to assume the seat of power herself

  5. Ross Nixon says:

Ideally, Ron Paul. He was possibly going to run as an Independant, but seems unlikely now according to his page on Wikipedia.

I really hope that ancient, senile, psycho Bush-lover does not get in this term. I will build an ark for all my friends to get the hell out of that foul country if he does.

    I find anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-evolution, religious right, anti-universal healthcare, anti-minimum wage, union-suppressing politicians to be quite terrifying ;)

If she gets the women’s vote I’m going to live on Mars.
This article made me feel less powerless for a minute: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/sep/10/uselections2008.barackobama

Since 1989, a member of the Bush or Clinton family has been President of the United States, so I personally did not favor Hillary Clinton. Twenty years of two families — that’s starting to look a lot like the beginnings of a monarchy.

I think McCain seems like a decent person. I just disagree with him on almost every count. Also, he’s pretty old – does that mean he’s going to have a heart attack and Sarah Palin is going to be president. She doesn’t seem qualified for that.

I’m personally voting for Barack Obama because I want a president who understands what it feels like to not be proud of your country sometimes.

Unfortunately, from my personal straw polls, I think xenophobia and racism are going to play a much larger role in this election that anyone is willing to admit. I know quite a few people that call themselves democrats who are not going to vote, or are going to vote for McCain because they can’t stand the thought of having a black man as president.

    Have fun on Mars then!

Have faith, enough Americans will see through the deceptions this time. And hopefully Obama won’t be a dull echo of the former administration; unlike the boring fudd that we’d all pinned our hopes on.

Actually it looks like the media is starting to turn on McCain/Palin… fingers crossed those lying sacks of shit have shot their wad too early trying to rev up the “culture wars” again…
