Creative Itty

I purchased Flowerâ„¢ on the weekend. It’s a very cute game with a very gay name, only available for Sony’s Playstation 3.

It’s freaking gorgeous. It has grass and flowers everywhere, and it all looks great, swaying in the breeze and changing color in the light. Oh yes, and you play the wind. The official trailer uses the old Donovan song to great effect (I recommend watching it in HD for best effect).

Above is what it actually looks like in-game; it runs a smooth 60FPS at full 1080P resolution (ie very sharp and very smooth). As a 3D graphics-y kind of guy I am very impressed, because I hadn’t realized we had come quite this far with realtime rendering.

It also has a bunch of darker, silhouette-y stuff that makes me feel bad for neglecting Drivey. I suck :(

But seriously, it can be almost disheartening seeing how much talent some people have. Anything you can think of is probably already being done by a whole bunch of other people, while another whole bunch of other people are doing stuff that is so cool it hasn’t even occurred to you yet. Although I’d rather be a small fish in a big pond, sometimes I miss the pre-internet days, back when you would only see one new neat/funny/clever thing per week instead of fifty times a day.

And then I see that more than a million people give two shits what Ashton Kutcher and Oprah are up to on Twitter, and I think deep down we must be just a bunch of morons who deserve nothing better. Maybe all the clever creative types should run away to Galt’s Gulch, where they can smoke themselves to death on Randian cigarettes (embossed with little gold dollar signs) while they admire each other for never sharing their talents with the unwashed and unworthy.

Update: Not sure where that last paragraph came from exactly… I think it’s a combination of tiredness and back pain. I’m not even sure what my point was supposed to be.
