What would Alain de Botton do?

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

This was a line from the internal monologue of Mark Corrigan in a recent episode of Peep Show. Reference is also made to a weekly podcast, which really caught my attention, but alas I can find no such thing online. Either it was simply made up to serve the joke or has since been discontinued… or I am just unbelievably bad at searching tonight.

Please Alain, if you are reading this (and I know you are) send me the URI for your weekly podcast— We needs it!

You know, I’m looking at this photo and thinking that combined with the slogan it would make a smashing t-shirt design…

Damn it, I was searching for the same thing for the same reason and it lead me here.

    Onward!

    Godspeed!

Alas! I too am also searching. I have found this: http://www.hayfestival.com/archive/details_38.aspx

but it is a one off not a weekly podcast…..le sigh…

  5. Gudmund says:

Also searching for the same reason you are, funny how a name dropped in a TV show can cause several people to search for the same thing on the web

  6. Brad says:

Ha! I’m searching for the same reason - a Peep Show reference. So I’m googling ‘alain de botton podcast’. Don’t think there is one.

  7. Scott Graham says:

We’re all in the same podcastless de Botton boat. ‘Le sigh’ is right.

I was wickedly excited when Mark thought it on Peep Show. Now I’m sad.

    Ok, I just sent this:

    Dear Alain,

Although I’m guessing this has probably already been suggested to you, I’m hoping to convince you of the need for a semi-regular podcast featuring your brain, your voice, and just about any subject matter you would be inclined to talk about.

The need for such a thing is evidenced by a fictional reference to such a thing which has brought several like minded people looking for it in vain, as you can see here.

    yours hopefully
    Mark

it’s very likely that he will click on the next link after reading this. is your second life world up to scratch?

  10. RichardN says:

Now now you lot, just settle down and be greatcoats that a certain Mr. Fry has come to our assistance. Have yet to actually listen but our hopes of a genuine poncecast may have been met.

  11. mark says:

That’s all well and good (I will definitely listen) but I’m afraid it doesn’t excuse the gaping void where Mr de Botton’s podcast should be.

And Alain, if you are reading I definitely do not think you are a ponce. I think you are a very nice, polite, sophisticated, erudite… oh um…. well not at all poncy anyway.

Just received this, I am assuming he won’t mind if I repost it here:

    Dear Mark,
Thanks so much for thinking of me in relation to a regular podcast. You’re absolutely right that I should get onto this.
But it’s obviously a question of time - I’ve got lots of demands, and then also, if I can mature my thoughts into books, they stand a lot more of a chance of being half-way decent than if I pour them out onto a blog as they go along.
I do hope you can understand. If it’s any consolation, I’ll have a new book out early in 2009. If I was doing podcasts, it might have been a year later!
    All good wishes,
    Alain

Oh well, he’s right of course, but we can always hope he feels the urge to pour out his thoughts in a podcast some day even if they are only half-baked.

  13. dirtymouse says:

now we have 2 degrees of separation.

  14. tosser says:

I hope his new book will be about podcasts.

  15. julia says:

how funny, I was here for the same reason too. Such a strange thing, the internet..

  16. mkoach says:

ha, I’m here for the same reason as well. Stumbled upon Peep show just last wk on youtube.
I was at his talk in New Zealand about two years ago, very interesting and insightful guy.
